As if the warm start to the season wasn't bad enough, heavy rains moved through New England on Tuesday, further impacting the region's limited manmade snowpack.
Only 18 areas operated on Christmas Eve, most of them with very limited terrain. 72 of the 90 (80%) ski areas projected to open to the public this season were closed.
While a larger number of areas have been projecting Saturday operations, the list appears to be dwindling, with Mt. Sunapee becoming the latest causality. The next potential snowmaking opportunity appears to be arriving Sunday night, with more seasonable temperatures to follow.
