According to the Franklin County Registry of Deeds, Berkshire East Ski Resort acquired 140 acres of land for nearly a quarter of a million dollars on March 14, 2014. Located east of the existing ski area, the tract could potentially signal future terrain expansion.
The Schaefer family first became involved in 1976 when Roy Schaefer operated the then-troubled ski area for a bank that had foreclosed on the then-troubled ski area. Schaefer later partnered with Michigan's Union Terminal Piers for nearly 3 decades, prior to purchasing the area outright with family members in 2007.
Since the buyout, sizable capital investments have been made in the ski area, as well as expansions into non-ski operations such as ziplining.
