Sugarloaf announced today that it has officially begun work on its West Mountain expansion project. The project was announced last spring.
The new complex will reportedly have 300 acres of trails and glades, served by a refurbished Doppelmayr high speed quad to be named the Bucksaw Express. Originally installed as the Swift Current lift at Big Sky, Montana, the 775 horsepower lift will climb 1,433 vertical feet over a run of 6,574 feet.
Eleven new trails, plus an expanded Horseshoe trail, will be cut this year, the majority of which will have snowmaking infrastructure in place for the debut season. Some of the new trails, such as Twitcher, will pass through new real estate developments. Other terrain may be abandoned, while the existing West Mountain double will be truncated with a significantly lower unloading terminal.
Unlike other prominent expansions in recent years, Sugarloaf is specifically not implying a December 2023 opening, but is instead slotting a late January or early February 2024 debut.
