In an unusual mid-season move, the The Upper Valley Snow Sports Foundation (UVSSF) has announced significant changes at Whaleback Mountain ski area.
Gerd Riess, Mountain Manager since June 2015, now has the title of Race Director and Mountain Projects Manager.
Volunteer General Manager/COO Robert West "will finally transition away from day to day responsibilities while continuing to provide support to ensure the success of the business."
Lift Operations Manager Adam Kaufman has been promoted to General Manager. Kaufman served as General Manager at Granite Gorge earlier this season.
Ski School Director Rebecca Reed now has the additional title of Assistant General Manager.
Located just off I-89 south of Lebanon, Whaleback has struggled through numerous bankruptcies over its 60 year history. The non-profit Upper Valley Snow Sports Foundation took control of the ski area starting with the 2013-14 season. While significant investments were made in snowmaking and a T-Bar for 2017-18, the area has struggled with lift issues, lighting problems, and the January thaws, including being unable to operate during the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. Despite the struggles, UVSSF reports "Snow Sports participation levels" have doubled this season.
