Downhill skiing could return to Waterville, Maine, if a new master plan gains traction.
The Friends of Quarry Road is working with the SE Group to see if it will be feasible to reopen the defunct Colby College ski area in Waterville. According to the Friends of Quarry Road, a rope tow was first opened at the hill in the 1930s. According to the New England Lost Ski Areas Project, the ski area closed in the 1970s. The recreation area currently features snowmaking and grooming on its nordic trails in the winter.
According to the Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel, the Friends of Quarry Road is looking into an alpine skiing and tubing facility at the Quarry Road Recreational Area. If opened, the City of Waterville would manage the ski area.
The defunct ski area once featured a 1963 Hall T-Bar, which served trails dropping some 235 vertical feet.
If reopened, the area would be the closest ski area to Augusta.
