Longtime Mt. Tom general manager passed away on February 25. He was 78.
A lifelong resident of Holyoke, Massachusetts, Moore remembered skiing Mt. Tom on its opening day in 1960 and soon held jobs at the area during his youth. A graduate of Holyoke High School, Moore earned a bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania State University before returning to his hometown.
Moore's 29-year tenure at the area included serving as assistant manager circa 1974 and general manager by 1976, a position he would hold through the area's closure in 1998. During his time as general manager, two chairlifts were installed and a popular summer business started, including an alpine slide and water park. Moore also held the titles of vice president and chairman of the board.
Moore's favorite ski trails were Ruthie's Run at Aspen (his favorite vacation spot) and Upper Main at Mt. Tom.
Following the closure of Mt. Tom, Moore launched a second career in the real estate business, while also serving as a ski industry consultant. Proudly sporting his SKI TOM license plate while driving around Holyoke, Moore held out hope that Mt. Tom would reopen. Moore also served as a mentor to his nephew, David Hunter, who worked for him in various roles at Mt. Tom before eventually becoming President and COO of Steamboat.
