Legendary Mad River Glen owner Betsy Pratt passed away today at the age of 95.
Born Elizabeth Love Stratton, her association with Mad River Glen dated back to the 1950s when she met Truxton Pratt Jr. while skiing at the mountain. The two were married in October 1954. Truxton Pratt was part of a group that acquired Mad River Glen in 1972, passing away three years later. Betsy Pratt owned the area for two decades after his passing, noting, "I consider ownership to be stewardship."
During her time as owner, snowmaking was added, the "Ski It If You Can" bumper sticker was introduced, and snowboarding was allowed and subsequently banned.
As the 1990s arrived, Pratt announced her intention to sell the mountain. In December 1995, she entered into an agreement to sell mountain to the present day ownership, Mad River Glen Cooperative.
